Known as the City of Lights, Lyon is a remarkable city that has been recognised as the world's leading emerging tourist destination for 2022. It is also known as the world capital of gastronomy and the second largest economic centre in France.
Its centre bears witness to 2,000 years of history, with the Roman amphitheatre of the Trois Gaules, the medieval and Renaissance architecture of Vieux Lyon and the modernity of the Confluence district on the Presqu'île. The traboules, covered passages between buildings, link the old Lyon to the hill of La Croix-Rousse.
Lyon's cuisine is world-renowned and there are many restaurants and bistros serving traditional dishes such as coq au vin and quenelles, as well as modern cuisine. The city is also known for its famous bouchons, small, cosy restaurants serving hearty meals made with local ingredients. Beyond its culinary offerings, Lyon is a hub for culture and entertainment. Each year, the city hosts numerous festivals, including the famous Fête des Lumières, an annual light festival, and Les Nuits de Fourvière, a summer festival of music, theatre and dance.
